9:00 am
a new israeli invasion looms over gaza and the palestinian enclaves battered with artillery and air strikes which is claiming a rising number of civilian lives. as israel say's this is just the beginning of the country's appeal for an end to the airstrikes and the rocket attacks. builds just after hours after a twenty four hour european strike it ultimately brought over twenty countries to a standstill the latest figures now suggest the eurozone is back in recession. and beijing ushers in a new top officials which will lead the country for the next decade in about ten minutes we'll look at how the world might be changed by china's emerging economic mind.
9:01 am
thanks very much for joining us here on r.t. today. live in moscow the israeli military is converging on gaza as it continues to pummel the palestinians from land and sea the operation dubbed pillars of defenses on the verge of turning into a new invasion says it's prepared to go all the way this under the pretext of self defense three israelis and at least fifteen palestinians including children and a pregnant woman have already being killed from the region with the latest bot. some unconfirmed reports from israeli media that tanks are moving south towards the border with gaza we've trying to confirm that with the israeli defense forces they will not confirm that at the moment it seems that that may be happening which would
9:02 am
indicate the situation moving towards a ground invasion of gaza as all of that goes on we've also got airstrikes continuing they have continued throughout the night and into today i spoke a little while ago to a source inside gaza as i was on the phone to him we heard explosions outside his apartment block and he was saying that the casualties are mounting and that the israelis are using a lot of drones flying over gaza that are dropping small missiles to try and target what they call the terrorist infrastructure there to try and kill hamas operatives there earlier today the funeral of jaggery the head of hamas is a military wing was held know how mass of people went so that no. staff went to that funeral for fear that they may be targeted in airstrikes there on the
9:03 am
other side houses busy launching rockets into southern israel today three israelis were killed when a rocket hit their apartment block in the south of israel so a very tense situation on both sides of the border down there there's various voices from various parts of the international community right here in the region we've got a palestinian liberation organization spokes person saying that this is a deliberate attempt by israel to try and ruin. the bid for statehood we've also got enough would have the palestinian president say he's cut short a visit to europe over this and he. has said more than once that he's called for a stop to this israeli aggression egypt has been very vocal it's withdrawn its ambassador to israel called for a u.n. security council meeting on this subject. gyptian president mohamed mursi has
9:04 am
called this unacceptable and it's there are reports he's trying to get the u.s. to pressure israel into stopping this attack the u.s. has said for its part that israel has the right to defend itself and russia are also commenting on this saying that israel's attack is a disproportionate use of force against gaza so all of this international furor erupting over this attack that may may result in a ground invasion those are the fears at the moment the latest from the southern border is the head of israel's southern command saying that this is just the beginning. of reporting right there an hour straight to gaza for us here for a reaction and an eyewitness account from an american human rights activist joke joining us live program and a big welcome to you sir nice to see you fifteen people are said to about been killed in guards or already what do we know about other casualties i understand
9:05 am
that you've just returned from one of the hospitals in the area. yes that's correct and a number of other internationals here visited the largest hospital in the gaza strip this morning and the casualties there are mounting as you know and many are horrendous i saw for one example a one year old girl who had been injured shortly shortly before our arrival in israel's bombing of satan and i've been told although i have not yet had time to confirm that she died after we left it's worth remembering i think that this current immediate exchange of hostilities began a week ago with israel's killing of a thirteen year old boy who was playing football during an incursion into the gaza strip and continued to escalate with another incursion on saturday which two more boys playing football as well as two young men who came to rescue them after their
9:06 am
bombing were killed so this is an escalation that began and continues to be continues with israel's wanton disregard for civilian life as its most prominent feature where you talk about an escalation of violence here certainly that is the case so we're looking for more international reaction to it already england and america basically putting the blame all on hamas at this point to israel's one civilians to keep away from hamas sites which are all targets for the i.d.f. to do people actually know where the militants are located and will they be able to be evacuated in time. well the militants have civilian lives like everyone else they ride in cars live in neighborhoods and israel is using that as an excuse to target. civilian areas under the pretext that there may be a militant living there late last night i witnessed what i'm pretty sure was the
9:07 am
use of white phosphorus and in civilian neighborhood. and i'm sure if you ask an israeli army spokesman about it he will tell you there was a militant there well maybe there was what do i know but these are civilian areas populated almost exclusively by civilians that israel is targeting and the mounting casualties here reflect that i think when you make a mention about the use of the possible use of white phosphorus it was certainly used during a previous gaza operation four years ago now the use of white phosphorus against civilians is considered to be a war crime that again there are many things regarding the occupation although they use all the various of blockages all of our medical supplies ambulances and food and basic necessities that are routinely blocked from getting into gaza so i would suppose that the use of white phosphorus against civilians i'll be it a war crime perhaps will be ignored by much of the global community.
9:08 am
unfortunately i imagine you are correct i spoke as well this morning with the director of al schieffer hospital who indicated to me that he thought some of the n.g.'s he had seen passing through their emergency room were consistent with the use of white phosphorus and he also spoke of what you alluded to the fact that the mounting casualties pouring into hospitals throughout the gaza strip are aggravated by the lack of essential medical medicines and medical supplies caused by israel's ongoing see. it's not simply a matter of. massive deaths and injuries horrific as that would be in and of itself there is also a lack of the basic necessities needed to treat them so. we are in right now a manmade disaster area ways than one well certainly is a manmade disaster in more ways than one we're right here hearing right now here in r.t. that the electricity has been cut off to gaza certainly that will in no way help
9:09 am
anyone who is are trying to seek medical medical attention at the moment as you well know as you well know for many decades now not just american presidents but world leaders of all try their own little middle east peace plan to try and bring israel and the palestinians together it's failed through and through and through is it possible that both sides are to blame in some way or another the both sides are reluctant to truly sit down at the peace talks. i don't think so when the israeli side speaks of peace talks what they generally mean is palestinians sacrificing their rights which they are universally acknowledged to have under international law the right to self-determination in their occupied territories the right to return for refugees ethnically cleansed in one nine hundred forty eight who incidentally are two thirds of the gaza strip population and the right to equality for palestinian citizens of israel these are all things that are completely beyond the bounds of consideration for the israeli mainstream
9:10 am
today and israel is of course moving further in the door and that direction with the merger of the parties of lieberman and netanyahu we don't see them moving any closer to a position where they would consider. fulfilling their basic obligations and that's what's at stake here the basic obligations israel has and the basic rights which palestinians are guaranteed by international laws un resolutions international court of justice decisions etc i could go on at length what a lot of gaza human rights activists are a joke that is all the time we have for today but thank you very much for joining us here on c thank you for having me. here on the program i spoke to an israeli official who hailed the ongoing operation as a success despite the rising number of civilian casualties in gaza. this is been so far one of the most surgical pinpoint military operations in modern military
9:11 am
history i think again you will see that the civilian to militant casualty ratio will show up in israel to have unfortunately killed civilians but far fewer then than any other comparable military. machine but you have a pinpoint operation you call this one of the most precise and exact and pinpoint military operations that israel's known in recent history and that can allow for what you might consider collateral damage the killing of children when you when you present it and you talk about civilians it's always said as all the civilian these ready civilians to being killed just today the three israelis who were killed but of the live and palestinians who were killed seven are confirmed militants two to use the likelihood now you are you worried possibly you're just giving rise to anti israeli attitudes among palestinians let's let's have a listen to this quickly as the hamas leader that we spoke to just a bit earlier please stand by. the assassination of this great leader. clearly
9:12 am
confirms that we are still in the heart of resistance with the israeli enemy designers generally knows nothing but the language of killing and blood our battle with the enemy is an open bottle to god willing this battle will end with palestine and jerusalem liberated and we should wait for our actions not in words. we've seen their actions a situation which most often anywhere in the world could accept what would you do were just one missile to land in central moscow but we talk about missiles and let's the scarify here we're talking about mortar rockets that are being attracted over some might say that a mortar rocket from the palestinian militants compared to your. health fire inside why the missiles from your. fighter jet so well that's quite a big difference between fireworks and bombs but the truth of the matter is that we have a situation where just today three israeli civilians were killed call them alters call them missiles. as or did civilians we have
9:13 am
a situation where in the recent past some thirty percent of these re the children in southern israel who died knows of post-traumatic stress disorder but israel was heavily criticized by a part of the world community i agree with you there i remind you and i point out that that was four years ago the lowest civilian to militant casualty rate in history twenty nine percent of those killed were civilians and i'm not belittling the death of any civilians but so far no one any other military campaign in the last century i think that we will see something similar this time we're hoping to achieve a number of things first and foremost to significantly degrade the command and control and operational abilities of hamas. while a middle east analyst nathan thrall believes the israeli government could actually be staging the conflict with gaza just a show with song top of its game. has been a great deal of pressure on the israeli government which has looked very impotent during this escalation and this is not new
9:14 am
a year ago in august two thousand and eleven kadima the opposition party was screaming at the top of its lungs that that likud was impotent and that that could demon knew how to handle this problem looking at a region in which the israeli public feels imperilled they see mortars coming from from syria they worry about the conflict from syria spreading they worry about rockets from hezbollah and this was one thing that the israeli government could do to show that it is capable of protecting its citizens as as they desire israelis continue to to say that they're ready to to occupy gaza if need be and it's certainly a possibility. what's not a smooth change at the top in china a beijing change of leadership for the next decade just few moments here on the program we look at how these changes could impact the global economy as well as china's relations with other nations.

things are just getting too expensive in london many families just can't afford to live in the city anymore so because of upcoming welfare cuts the government is buying or rented property to relocate people outside of the city the maximum housing allowance for welfare will go down to four hundred pounds a month which is peanuts compared to the one thousand two hundred fifty pounds needed to pay for the average three room apartment expelling the poor from london seems a bit fishy to me so instead of say regulating prices or cock for big using the money from the welfare cuts to create jobs so people can earn a living for themselves rather than rely on handouts london has decided to make itself some official get to. what is to call a place where everyone from

a certain economic classes forcibly shove to although this may sound like some sort of help from the government it seems to me like a means to get rid of the poor rather than trying to make the poor less poor but that's just my opinion.

the expansion of social misery people can make the argument that austerity is a solution to the current problems being faced by your european citizenry and in particular by the southern european citizenry the problem is what is that austerity mean is that neoliberal e.u. austerity where you cut basically all of those all of the social protection that keeps people from descending down the sort of downward spiral of social misery and with all of that escalating conflict or do you leave social protection in place and cut in places where there really is overspending such as an bank bailouts and and and areas like these. six twenty pm moscow time this is artsy now the u.s. and afghanistan the beginning talks of a new security arrangements the focus is on how big of america's presence will be

after two thousand and fourteen when most troops have left the discussions come amid a climate of mistrust with the thorniest issue being whether u.s. soldiers should be given immunity from prosecution under afghan law this report now from lucy cuff on off in kabul. the u.s. and afghanistan have kicked off talks on thursday tough talks about the security framework agreement that the two countries will maintain after most of the nato combat forces withdraw from the country at the end of twenty fourteen now these are expected to be rather controversial contentious talks they come amid a climate of suspicion and mistrust between the two countries one of the biggest issues on the table here we expect this to take about several months to complete and of course the afghan government has long complained about the conduct of u.s. forces operations on the ground here in afghanistan some of the issues that they are not happy with are for example the controversial u.s. special forces strikes night raids that end up killing many civilians also at the
9:22 am
issue of sovereignty here is a top deal i mean the afghan government insists that american soldiers who are accused of committing crimes here in afghanistan are tried within this country under afghanistan's legal system american troops say no they want their men to be tried in the united states and of course this issue has taken on rather. more urgency in light of the massacre that took place in march for an american soldier was accused of going essentially on a shooting spree killing sixteen civilians in the kandahar province issues like this really do resonate with the public it's a very visual example of sort of misdeeds by the u.s. forces and of course the illegal murder of civilians is certainly something that should be tried under afghan law according to the officials here this also comes amid a climate of mistrust by afghans after certain cultural missteps for example the controversial video that showed u.s. marines urinating on the corpses of afghans as well as of course the notorious
9:23 am
cases of clothing on the burning sort of indicating the climate of social insensitivity that unfortunately exists on the ground here with u.s. troops and what we've seen is instances of for example taliban plans up in the ranks of afghan soldiers who end up turning their guns against the american trainers. well as other afghans who may or may not be happy with the conduct of certain soldiers and end up turning their guns on the american soldiers as a result of that and so what this really reflects perhaps a policy that hasn't necessarily played out very well. for the reporting there now china is weeklong power transfer has come to an end with being anointed the communist party's next leader he takes over from hu jintao his guidance lead beijing through a decade of rapid growth and sort overtake japan as the world's second largest economy local journalist henry morton reports that process started over the last week with the communist party of china's congress the eighteenth party congress
